SUBJECT: UAN to Establish a UAN-PAC

WHEREAS, it is vital to ensure the voice of the direct care registered nurse be heard; and

WHEREAS, the United American Nurses (UAN) needs to become its own political entity to represent unionized registered nurses nationally; and

WHEREAS, to represent UAN’s unique perspective it must promote its own political agenda; and

WHEREAS, the UAN has differing political and legislative agendas from the American Nurses Association (ANA); and

WHEREAS, a UAN Political Action Committee (UAN-PAC) is an important element in our fight for better pay, better benefits and, improved working conditions for nurses; and

WHEREAS, improved working conditions directly impact safe quality patient care; and

WHEREAS, improved working conditions directly impact cost effective health care; and

WHEREAS, currently there is no structured mechanism within the UAN to raise funds to support the political agenda of the direct care registered nurse;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

1) The 2007 National Labor Assembly (NLA) direct the UAN Executive Committee to establish a UAN-PAC which shall, on behalf of the UAN, be responsible to raise money, endorse candidates, and build strong allies in the legislature; and

The NLA direct the UAN to establish a UAN-PAC Board of Trustees within two months after the 2007 NLA concludes.
