SUBJECT: Role of Retired Nurses in NVAC/UAN

Introduced by: UAN National VA Council

Action: Passed 3/21/07


WHEREAS, retirement is a concern of all NVAC Nurses who wish to continue the affiliation with the NVAC; and

WHEREAS, retired Nurses will be allowed to join the UAN at direct pay; and

WHEREAS, many of these registered nurses are less than 5 years from retirement; and

WHEREAS, retired nurses affiliated with their state association will retain rights to benefits which they now have; and

WHEREAS, the role of the retired nurse can be utilized as lobbyists, organizers, assist with elections, program organizers, educators and mentors; and

WHEREAS, registered nurses who have retired from employment represented by bargaining units, represented by an Affiliate, shall be eligible for membership provided that the individual maintains licensure as required by the Affiliate’s constitution or bylaws; and

WHEREAS, the registered nurses realize that they are prohibited from exercising any membership right regarding collective bargaining, including the right to vote in national elections or the right to seek national office; and

WHEREAS, any UAN/NVAC membership right afforded retired employees may not include the right to elected or appointed positions within the UAN/NVAC relating to collective bargaining representation;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED to have UAN appoint a committee to study the inclusion of retired nurses into the UAN.
