SUBJECT: Nurse Curriculum Education and RN Union History

WHEREAS, Registered nurses are empowered at the workplace and in their professional practice through an understanding of the history of nurse unionism, and

WHEREAS, Registered nurses are better prepared to embrace collective bargaining when they understand the historical and legal background of collective bargaining for nurses, and

WHEREAS, Registered nurses will have a stronger appreciation of the personal and professional advancement nurses have achieved through collective bargaining when they know their profession's union history, and

WHEREAS, Students who seek to become registered nurses will better value the role of collective bargaining in advancing the profession and the economic and general welfare of registered nurses if they are taught RN union history and collective bargaining in their classes,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the UAN develop a educational module on collective bargaining and RN union history to be offered to its constituent members, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the UAN urge the American Nurses Association and other professional nurse organizations to promote more classroom instruction of student nurses about collective bargaining and the history of unionization among registered nurses, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the UAN assist organizations representing registered nurses in providing this educational instruction.
