SUBJECT: Support for the Striking Nurses in Ohio and Minnesota

WHEREAS, more than 770 nurses have been on strike at Forum Health-Western Reserve Care System in Youngstown, Ohio since May 1, 2001; and
WHEREAS, more than 1,350 nurses have just completed a successful three week strike at two Fairview Hospital facilities in Minnesota since June 3, 2001; and
WHEREAS, critically important issues, such as safe staffing and adequate compensation, which affect all nurses who are part of the UAN, are involved in these disputes; and
WHEREAS, The UAN and its constituent members are firmly committed to providing maximum support for collective bargaining and visible and effective support for members who are forced to go on strike; and
WHEREAS, the striking nurses in Ohio continue fighting for all nurses, and we all will be harmed if they do not prevail in their struggle to obtain a fair contract which addresses key issues such as safe staffing and adequate compensation.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Executive Council and National Labor Assembly congratulate the Fairview nurses in Minnesota on their fortitude and successful conclusion of a three week strike; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Executive Council and National Labor Assembly commit their unwavering support for striking Ohio nurses; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we encourage all CMAs to provide financial, picketing and moral support throughout the strike until its conclusion.
