SUBJECT: Latex Allergy

WHEREAS, career ending, life-altering and life-threatening reactions to latex products in the health care environment persist among nurses and patients, and
WHEREAS, dangerous latex products, especially powdered latex gloves, continue to be used in health care facilities despite the availability of good quality, non-latex, synthetic alternatives,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the UAN promote state-based legislative efforts to prevent latex allergy and allergic reactions to latex among health care workers and patients and assure safe work environments for latex-allergic workers, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the UAN encourage nurses and the general public to report all adverse reactions to medical devices containing latex to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's MEDWATCH reporting system and report reactions to consumer products containing latex to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
