SUBJECT: UAN Organizing Initiatives

WHEREAS, registered nurses are demanding the strength unionization provides to combat the intolerable workplace and care environments in hospitals today, and
WHEREAS, registered nurses must be involved in the decision-making process about professional practice and quality patient care concerns at the workplace, and
WHEREAS, The United American Nurses through its state members is the largest union of registered nurses in the United States, and
WHEREAS, the demands from registered nurses seeking union representations exceeds current resources, and
WHEREAS, all unions recognize the power of the registered nurse as the backbone of the health care system, and
WHEREAS, the competition among unions to represent registered nurses is intense, and
WHEREAS, every newly organized registered nurse and newly negotiated collective bargaining agreement helps all registered nurses improve patient care, professional practice and workplace rights, and
WHEREAS, more than two million registered nurses employed in nursing remain unorganized today,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the UAN recommends to the ANA Executive Director that the operational resources of the UAN committed to organizing be increased to the greatest extent possible within the UAN's budget with the goal being to double its organizing budget over the next 2 years; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the NLA recommends that the UAN Executive Council prepare a budget that significantly increases the resources devoted to organizing with goal of doubling the current organizing budget within 2 years; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the United American Nurses strongly encourages its constituent member associations to dramatically increase their organizing budgets for internal as well as external organizing for the same period.
