SUBJECT: Establishing A UAN National Strike Fund
Introduced by: District of Columbia Nurses Association
Date of Resolution: April 27, 2001
Action: Resolution Adopted on June 27, 2001
WHEREAS, the UAN affirms the right of nurses in collective bargaining to engage in duly authorized strikes, and
WHEREAS, numerous health care employers are failing to bargain fairly in contract negotiations and are committing a variety of other unfair labor practices, and
WHEREAS, represented nurses are finding themselves unable to achieve needed remedies in bargaining for unsafe RN staffing, other serious care delivery issues and workplace concerns - all of which negatively impact patient care, and
WHEREAS, strikes by represented nurses are occurring more frequently and often are of longer duration, and
WHEREAS, nurses who have made the decision to withhold their services and are striking need the support of the union arm of ANA, the UAN, and
WHEREAS, the pooling of financial resources at the national level affords the opportunity for increased monetary aid for each nurse represented by a constituent member of the UAN, and
WHEREAS, the ability to sustain a strike demonstrates RN union power and enhances positive outcomes that safeguard patients, advance the profession, and benefit nurses,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the UAN Executive Council develop a proposal for a UAN National Strike Fund and bring it to the next meeting of this body for consideration.
