SUBJECT: Affiliation with the American Federation of Labor- Congress of Industrial Organizations

WHEREAS, the ANA House of Delegates in June 1999 created the United American Nurses (UAN) to strengthen the labor voice of ANA's unionized registered nurses across the United States, and

WHEREAS, the United American Nurses at its second annual Labor Assembly proudly notes that the UAN is today the nation's largest union of registered nurses, for registered nurses, and led by registered nurses, and

WHEREAS, the UAN members place the highest priority on creating work and care environments in which RN staffing is at the level required by safe and appropriate care delivery standards; in which the safety and security of registered nurses is unquestionably assured; in which the voices of registered nurses are heard and listened to at all levels of decision-making; and in which compensation for registered nurses is commensurate with their professional expertise, and

WHEREAS, the United American Nurses on behalf of its members, continually seeks to strengthen registered nurses in their role as health care providers by establishing partnerships with those who share the goal of obtaining the highest quality standard of health care for all Americans and with those who seek to aggressively address the formidable challenges of our profession, and

WHEREAS, the United American Nurses seeks to enhance its contribution to positive social and economic change by standing shoulder to shoulder with the 13 million working women and men who make up the AFL-CIO, and the 65 AFL-CIO affiliates who are chartered members, and

WHEREAS, the UAN members of the following states:

the Alabama State Nurses Association
the Alaska Nurses Association
the Colorado Nurses Association
the District of Columbia Nurses Association
the Georgia Nurses Association
the Illinois Nurses Association
the Indiana State Nurses Association
the Iowa Nurses Association
the Kansas State Nurses Association
the Kentucky Nurses Association
the Michigan Nurses Association
the Minnesota Nurses Association
the Missouri Nurses Association
the Montana Nurses Association
the Nevada Nurses Association
the New Jersey State Nurses Association
the New York State Nurses Association
the North Carolina Nurses Association
the Ohio Nurses Association
the Oregon Nurses Association
the Utah Nurses Association
the Virgin Islands State Nurses Association
the Washington State Nurses Association
the West Virginia Nurses Association, and
the Wyoming Nurses Association


have enthusiastically and tirelessly supported efforts over the past two years to affiliate with the AFL-CIO, and


WHEREAS, in an historic decision on May 2, 2001, the AFL-CIO authorized the issuance of an AFL-CIO charter, and

WHEREAS, the UAN Executive Council on May 2, 2001, unanimously referred acceptance of the AFL-CIO charter to the National Labor Assembly on June 27, 2001.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that UAN President Cheryl L. Johnson, RN, convey to AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney and the AFL-CIO affiliate unions our enthusiastic commitment to work closely with them on all matters affecting America's health care system, the economic and general welfare of registered nurses and the standard of living of all working people, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the United American Nurses holds in high regard its relationship with the American Nurses Association (ANA) which brings the resources, talent, prestige, and history of ANA to the UAN affiliation and further the UAN proudly notes that the AFL-CIO recognizes and appreciates this additional value to the precedent-setting affiliation relationship, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that having read the AFL-CIO report from the Special Committee on Charters, the UAN Executive Council be instructed to take the appropriate steps to institute the charter and the recommendations in good faith, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the United American Nurses Labor Assembly approve the UAN Executive Council's recommendations and by this vote proudly accepts the charter membership in the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations effective July 1, 2001.
