Subject: Health and Safety Priorities at the Local Bargaining Unit Level
Introduced by: UAN Executive Council
Action: Adopted June 22,2000


WHEREAS, Each day, registered nurses face numerous occupational safety and health hazards on the job, and

WHEREAS, Thousands of nurses have personally experienced disabling diseases as a result of these workplace hazards, and

WHEREAS, OSHA and other health and safety regulations do not provide enough protection to nurses, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the UAN focus on health and safety efforts at the local bargaining unit level by:

  • Encouraging the negotiation of health and safety language into each contract and
    sharing that language among CMA collective bargaining units
  • Encouraging the CMA collective bargaining programs to identify a health and safety contact in each UAN bargaining unit.
  • Disseminating the ANA Health and Safety Resource Guide and providing training for local bargaining unit.
  • Training CMA staff members on health and safety:
    • OSHA 200 log review and analysis
    • organizing around health and safety
    • negotiating health and safety contract
  • language
  • Including health and safety questions in contract surveys
