Subject: National Labor Assembly and House of Delegates Meeting Schedule Introduced by: District of Columbia Nurses Association
Action: Adopted June 22, 2000
WHEREAS, The greatest influx of graduate nurses and graduate physicians join hospital staffs in May and June, and
WHEREAS, Safe patient care during the prime orientation and transition of these "new" direct care givers in June, July, and August requires the expertise, support, and physical presence of experienced staff nurses, and
WHEREAS, Staff nurses are required to take employer approved vacation or other leave to attend national ANA meetings, and
WHEREAS, Time off for staff nurses is often limited and fully restricted during summer months, and
WHEREAS, More direct participation by the majority of the nursing workforce the staff nurses in the decision making of the National Labor Assembly and the House of Delegates is an important goal, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the UAN Executive Council, in consultation with the American Nurses Association Board of Directors, discuss the issues required to facilitate rescheduling the House of Delegates and the National Labor Assembly from summer meetings to spring meetings; and be it further
RESOLVED, That this change be implemented as soon as financially feasible, and be it further
RESOLVED, That the UAN develop and facilitate the negotiation of model contract language mandating unrestricted leaves of absence for union and association business.
