Carolyn Hietamaki, RN
Director |
UAN Director Carolyn Hietamaki began her union work when she began her career as an RN, helping to negotiate her union’s first contract during her first year on the job. Hietamaki is a wound care RN/stomal nurse at Marquette General Health System on Michigan’s Upper Penninsula.
Locally, Hietamaki serves as president of the RN Staff Council bargaining unit at her facility, a position she has held for the past 10 years. She also is the vice president of the Superior Chapter of the Michigan Nurses Association.
In 1984, Hietamaki and other bargaining team members led a 58-day strike which ultimately gave staff nurses an equal voice in determining staffing levels for individual hospital units—a strike during which hospital management tried to break the union.
At the state level, she is a former chair/president of MNA’s Economics & General Welfare cabinet and secretary of the MNA Board of Directors.
Nationally, Hietamaki has served as chair of the United American Nurses' nominating committee and co-chair of the State Nurses Association’s Labor Coalition.
Hietamaki was elected to UAN's Executive Council in 2005. |
